This character means “not”. It denies whatever characters used together. Like a prefix, “un-”, it is used for many words.
Forty-year-olds are called fuwaku, of which waku means “confused” or “be at a loss”. Accompanying the prefix fu (un-), fuwaku means “have no doubt” or “determined”. It came from Confucius. When one becomes forty, he has no doubt.

- Draw the top horizontal line from left to right.
