tsuchi, do
Tsuchi is a substance forming the surface of this planet. It includes dirt, mud, soil, and earth.
Clay is called tsuchi or nendo. Nendo is consisted of two characters. The nen means sticky. The do is this one, earth. Literally, it means sticky earth.
An earthen bell is made of clay. It is called dorei. The do is today’s character. The rei means a bell. Earthen bells come in various shapes. You can find some examples here.
Let me show you ours. This bell is a souvenir from Yufuin in Oita, Kyushu.
On the other day, I mentioned days of the week. To say a day of the week we put the suffix, yo bi. With this character, the day is do yo bi, that is, Saturday.
This character is written with three strokes. The two horizontal lines are parallel. The vertical line goes through the center.
