Sad

kanashi-i, hi

Kanashii means sad.

We have another word meaning sad and reading kanashii.Today’s character is more commonly used than the other one.

There is a word combining these characters. That’s hiai.

Although both mean the same basically, the original meanings of the characters are a bit different. While today’s character symbolized a heart torn apart, the other character indicates sympathy – a mouth wearing clothes, that is, sympathetic voices are gathered.
