Number 10,000 (Sosho)

man

Today is the first anniversary of our original domain. Just a year ago, we moved our blog from wordpress.com to japanesecalligrapher.com. Nao and I both appreciate the warm support that we are getting through various media. Thank you for visiting our website.

Ichiman is 10,000. Hyakuman is 1,000,000. In English, units of 3 digits go like thousand, million, billion and so on. In Japanese, big numbers increment by 4 digits and they goes like man, oku, chō, etc. The distance between numbers next to each other is 4 digits.

Here are lists of these numbers.

In English

  • one thousand … 1,000
  • one million … 1,000^2
  • one billion … 1,000^3

In Japanese

  • ichi man … 10,000
  • ichi oku … 10,000^2 = 100,000,000
  • icchō …  10,000^3 = 1,000,000,000,000

Today’s character is written in a sōsho style.

Its kaisholooks like this. >>>
